I’ve received many very nice comments here over the years about The Sky Village, the first book in the Kaimira series. I also regularly receive emails from people asking about book 2 in the series.
I’ve not had much of an update over the past few years, unfortunately. But I came to a decision recently, and now it’s time for an update.
First a bit of history. I created Kaimira as a staff member of a company that developed stories for kids. It was a fantastic job, but the tradeoff was that I didn’t actually own Kaimira. Instead, I received a salary.
During the financial collapse of 2008, that company shut down, and all of its IP was taken over by a lender. To make a long story short, over the next few years I tried to make a deal that would allow me to finish the series, but it ended up being cheaper for the new owners to sit on the IP rather than make a deal.
I want to point out that the publisher was never part of the problem. They were always super supportive, flexible, and amazing.
And to be clear, none of this was about money for me. I didn’t ask for money in any of the deals I attempted. I only wanted permission to finish and publish the rest of the series. But it ended up being way more complicated than it should have been, and I finally had to give up. I’m pretty stubborn, so I kept at it years longer than I should have. Any sane person would have seen the writing on the wall and given up within the year. A couple of my friends did call me crazy because of it, and they weren’t joking.
I finally decided that even though I can’t continue that story, I can take some of the ideas and themes that inspired Kaimira and tell a new story. And this is what I’ve started working on. I’ll post updates here about the new series as well as other books I’m working on. Those of you who enjoyed The Sky Village, I hope you’ll give the new series a chance. I’m considering waiting until I have a complete story arc finished (maybe 3 books) before I publish so that nobody is left hanging.
